"Sauret 1743"copy

This violin was the concert instrument of Emile Sauret, the last pupil of Charles de Beriot. De Beriot himself owned both a del Gesu attributed to 1744 and a fine Maggini violin, instruments of similar tonal qualities. Sauret also owned a Stradivari of 1684, which was reportedly inferior to the Guarneri in power, reserve and volume of tone. After his death in 1920, both the Guarneri and the Stradivari were bought by John P. Sheridan. It was acquired by Itzhak Perlman in 1986 from its previous owner, the collector Howard Gottlieb of Chicago. Mr. Perlman also plays on the magnificent “Soil” Stradivari of 1714, so once again the “Sauret” is paired with a Stradivari in the hands of a great virtuoso.
